Using WhatsApp screenshots as testimonials

A spontaneous message from a happy customer often convinces more than a polished review. You still need their permission, to protect their data and to present it in a readable way. Here is how.

Why screenshots convince

A screenshot shows a real exchange, with its natural tone, emojis and sometimes typos. Visitors read it as genuine rather than edited.

The downsides: they are hard to read on mobile, they can expose personal data, and search engines do not read text inside an image.

Getting the customer's permission

Before publishing, ask for permission in writing and say exactly what will be visible. Keep their reply.

Permission request

Hi [Name], your message really made my day! May I publish it on our website showing only your first name (no number, no profile photo)? A simple yes or no is perfect, thank you!

Anonymising the screenshot

  • Hide the phone number and full name; keep the first name or initial if the customer agrees.
  • Blur or remove the profile photo.
  • Remove other people's messages and unrelated details (address, amounts, dates if not needed).
  • Never change the words of the message itself.

Presenting it cleanly on your site

  • Crop to the useful message, without the phone's status bar.
  • Add the transcript under the image: readable on mobile and by Google.
  • Show the customer's first name, job or city if they agreed.
  • Group several screenshots in a wall or carousel instead of scattering them.

The legal frame, in general terms

In the EU, a customer's message contains personal data: the GDPR requires a legal basis, usually consent, and the right to withdraw it at any time. Other countries have their own rules.

This is general information, not legal advice for your situation.

How Plausa turns a WhatsApp reply into a testimonial you can display

Instead of cropping screenshots, send your collection link in the WhatsApp chat. The customer answers by text, voice or video, agrees to publication in the form, and the testimonial lands in your dashboard.

You compare the AI-polished version with the original, approve it, and show it on your site as a wall or widget, with text search engines can read.

Frequently asked questions

Can I publish a screenshot without asking?

It's not recommended: the message contains personal data. Ask for written permission and keep it.

Should I hide the first name?

Not necessarily. A first name alone is often fine, but it's the customer's call.

Does Google read text in a screenshot?

Not reliably. Always add the message transcript next to the image.

Is a screenshot of a voice note useful?

Barely, since nobody can hear it. Publish the audio or its transcript instead, with consent.

What if the customer withdraws consent?

Remove the screenshot promptly from your site and social accounts.
