How to ask for a testimonial and actually get one back

Most testimonial requests fail for the same three reasons: they arrive too late, they ask an open question nobody knows how to answer, and they require effort. Here is the exact sequence we recommend, plus messages you can copy, paste and send in the next ten minutes.

Free plan: up to 10 testimonials and one wall. No card required.

Ask at the moment of relief

The best time is right after a customer feels the result — the first successful delivery, the onboarding call that went well, a five-star support rating, a renewal. Ask within 48 hours of that moment. After two weeks, the emotion is gone and so is your reply rate. If you use NPS, an 8–10 score is a ready-made trigger: Plausa can send the request automatically as soon as a promoter answers.

The seven steps

Follow them in order. Each one removes a reason for the customer to say no.

  1. 1. Pick 10 named customers, not a list

Choose people who got a specific result and who already replied warmly to you at some point. Ten targeted asks beat a 500-address blast, and you can name the result in the message.

  2. 2. Send from a person, not a brand

Use your own name and signature, and reply in the thread you already share. Requests from noreply@ addresses read as marketing and get ignored.

  3. 3. Say why you are asking, in one line

"We're rebuilding our site and I'd like real customer voices on it" gives a reason. A reason makes the request a favour between people instead of a task.

  4. 4. Ask 2–3 specific questions instead of "any feedback?"

What was the problem before? What changed, ideally with a number? What would you tell someone hesitating? Specific questions produce quotes you can publish as-is.

  5. 5. Remove every step but one

Send a single link that opens a branded page with your questions. No account, no login, no attachment. In Plausa the customer types or records straight in the browser, on phone or desktop.

  6. 6. Offer text or video, never demand video

Let people pick. Text converts best; the ones who choose video give you your best asset. A 30-second webcam clip is enough — say so explicitly, or people imagine a production.

  7. 7. Follow up once, then stop

One short reminder after four to five days recovers a large share of replies. A second reminder costs you goodwill. Thank everyone who answers and tell them where the quote will appear.

Ready-to-send messages

Replace the bracketed parts and send. Keep them short — every extra paragraph lowers the reply rate.

Email — the main ask

Subject: quick favour, 2 minutes

Hi [First name],

You mentioned that [specific result, e.g. "the onboarding cut your setup time in half"] — that stuck with me.

We're putting real customer voices on our site, and I'd love yours. Would you answer three short questions? It takes about two minutes, right in your browser, text or a quick video, whichever you prefer:

[your Plausa link]

No account needed, and nothing goes public until you're happy with it.

Thanks a lot,
[Your name]

WhatsApp — for customers you already text

Short, informal, one link

Hi [First name]! Quick one — we're adding customer testimonials to our site and I'd really like yours after [project / result]. 3 short questions, 2 minutes, text or a short video: [your Plausa link] 🙏

Post-purchase / post-delivery

Send 24–48 h after the result lands

Hi [First name],

Now that [deliverable] is live, how did it go on your side?

If you're happy with it, would you mind leaving a short testimonial? Three questions, two minutes: [your Plausa link]

And if something isn't right, reply here instead — I'd rather fix it first.

Video-specific ask

Use when you want clips for social

Hi [First name],

Would you be up for a 30-second video testimonial? No filming setup needed — you click the link, record from your webcam or phone, and you can retake as many times as you like:

[your Plausa link]

Three prompts are on screen so you never have to improvise. If video isn't your thing, the same link takes text.

Thanks!

Single follow-up

Send once, 4–5 days later, same thread

Hi [First name],

Just floating this back up in case it got buried — still would love your two minutes on this:

[your Plausa link]

If now's not a good time, no problem at all, just say the word and I'll stop nudging.

The three questions to put in the form

Copy these into your Plausa form. They map to the structure of a usable testimonial: problem, change, recommendation.

  • What was the situation before you worked with us — what wasn't working?
  • What changed since? Anything measurable (time saved, revenue, fewer errors) helps.
  • What would you say to someone who's hesitating right now?

Five things that kill reply rates

Asking for "a review" with no link

"Could you write us a review?" makes the customer invent the format. Send the questions and the form.

Requiring an account

Any signup wall loses most people. A public link with no login is the single biggest lever.

Sending to a list

Bulk requests read as marketing. Name the person and the result you delivered.

Asking months later

The reply rate collapses once the result stops feeling recent. Trigger the ask on the event, not on your calendar.

Publishing without asking

Always confirm where the quote will appear. Plausa keeps submissions unpublished until you approve them, and stores the original wording next to the polished version.

Make the ask automatic

Once the message works, stop sending it by hand. Plausa can request a testimonial on the events that already signal a happy customer.

On a promoter NPS score

Run an NPS campaign; anyone answering 9 or 10 gets the testimonial request immediately, in their language.

On a won deal in Propuls

When a deal moves to Won in Propuls, the testimonial request fires without you touching it.

By email or WhatsApp

Each account gets a dedicated inbound email address, and WhatsApp requests use a pre-filled wa.me link you can send from your phone.

In three languages

Requests and published testimonials work natively in French, English and Spanish, so one process covers all three markets.

Frequently asked

How many people should I ask to get five testimonials?

With a named ask, a specific reason and a one-click link, roughly one in three warm customers replies. Asking ten to fifteen people usually returns four to six usable testimonials.

Should I offer a discount or a gift for a testimonial?

No. Paid or incentivised testimonials are misleading to buyers and against most platforms' rules. Ask people who already got a result — that is the only incentive you need.

Can I edit what the customer wrote?

You can publish a polished version that fixes typos and cuts filler, and Plausa keeps the original stored so you can always show the customer's own wording. Never change the meaning.

What if a customer replies with something negative?

Treat it as feedback, not as a testimonial. Fix the issue, then ask again later. Sentiment analysis in Plausa flags negative submissions so they never end up on your wall.

How long should a testimonial be?

Two to four sentences for text, twenty to forty seconds for video. Longer video is fine — it can be cut into short captioned clips for social.

Do I need a developer to publish what I collect?

No. Approved testimonials go on a public wall with its own URL, plus a grid, masonry, carousel or badge embed you paste as one script tag.
